This is a placeholder entry for the dating advice thread.
I still have a profile on OKcupid (it says that I am seeing someone), and will occasionally get mail from it. Usually it is someone saying that the picture of me with Wierd Al is awesome. However, sometimes I get one of these (the bit in quotes is from my profile about what I am looking for):
"You are smart, single, reasonably good-looking, have a good sense of humor, don't smoke, and aren't a douchebag."
Oh well, one out of 6 isn't bad :-p
So presuming this dude is single he is ugly, stupid, not funny, a smoker, and a douchebag. Granted it could be some other combination. And as I have an awesome boyfriend I am not interested in any case. But way to make yourself sound interesting to others! I wonder if he thinks of himself as a "Nice Guy". |

| | angry | ] | I hate my biostatistics* professor. He is a terrible teacher, he mumbles, and frequently I wind up more confused about the subject matter by listening to him. Half the class is usually asleep and the other half are playing on their laptops. He was behind schedule by the second day of class. The only time we had a decent lecture was when he was out of the country for 2 weeks and the TA taught class.
Also we just got our midterm back and I got a 44/70. I got this because of things like this: part a has a model and an ANOVA table, part b asks you to interpret things from that model and table, so I didn't copy and paste the answer from part a into part b. I had the correct answer but I got a 1/5 for part b. When I spoke with him about it, he was just like well you should have copied it. SO MAD!!!
I think part of the problem is that I am not a biostats major, but he teaches as though everyone is. Even though the only biostats people taking this class are undergrads, and there are only a few in a class of about 50.
Anyway hate.
*Note I don't mind the material, sometimes I think it is irrelevant but you never know. |

| Study ideas from the past 2 days |

| [ | mood |
| | nerdy | ] | 1) Does eating chocolate increase happiness? Inspired by the huge amount of chocolate we had around the department yesterday, and the fact that I have given up candy and cookies for pretend lent.
Study design: randomized control trail, possibly case-crossover. I don't think you could double blind it, unless there is some chocolate substitute that looks and tastes just like chocolate. This is a problem as it could lead to confounding. The unexposed group would be people who were given no chocolate for X period of time. The exposure would consist of a variety of amounts or doses of chocolate, standardized by bodyweight, not sure about increments yet. Maybe split people into groups by type of chocolate received, dark, milk, etc. Outcome would be measure by self-report on a Likert scale, other questionnaire type things, and measures of stress which I haven't looked into yet.
Problem: everyone wants to be in the exposed group. :D
2) Does ipod/cell phone use cause hip or hand cancer. We were talking about an old study that looked at cell phones and brain cancer in the 90s (did not find an association), someone wondered if there had been any newer studies of this, and I said "would you have to look at hip cancer too?" I think you should. It is active use of the cell phone that people thought might cause brain tumors, so hip cancer-maybe not, but if cell phones cause brain cancer they should totally cause hand cancer as well.
In case you weren't paying attention, yes I am a nerd. |

| | tired | ] | This semester is seriously kicking my ass. Not that I am doing poorly in anything (as far as I know), but that I have so much work to do. I am so tired. Can I have another month off now please? I shouldn't complain because my life is good, but so very tired.
Giving up chocolate and cookies for "Lent". I eat too much junk food and this is a good way for me to go without. Yay for self challenge. Except for Sunday which is the chocolate affair, a cancer benefit with loads of delicious chocolate things. I'll be helping out at that, and there will be no regrets! |

Yeah, I feel like I should update more than I do, which is maybe once a month. Maybe I'll start posting about things that piss me off, there's certainly no end to those.
I read the first two of Julia London's Bridgerton series over the weekend, just one more left. I really like this series, it's just fun! And an excellent way to procrastinate.
Ok, back to work! |

| | happy | ] | I am 28 today! Yay! This has been a particularly good year for birthday celebrations. I got cupcakes in study group Saturday, yesterday went for pizza with my EPA friends, going for sushi with my school friends today (those that are still here), Fall Break starts today, I am going to NYC tomorrow, get to see a bunch of my friends, and I am going to see Spamalot! Then on Sunday, when I return to Chapel Hill, I have my level 2 improv show. Hopefully I won't suck at that.
Life is still good. :-) |

| Thinking about my life |
[Oct. 10th, 2007|10:41 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | good | ] | I’m doing more things than I ever thought I would. Getting a PhD in epidemiology, taking classes in improve comedy and going to a lot of shows, teaching myself how to play guitar, making new friends and going out with them. I’m going dancing tomorrow. I’ve never actually been to a club to go dancing. Usually I stick to weddings, the very occasional party that involves dancing, and (as Tracy can attest) my own apartment/house. I talked to my Mom the other night, and she said she was kind of surprised at how much I was doing (pleased, but surprised). I think that’s because I never went out during high school, except to go to the movies, mostly with my sister. I was always very much the homebody. And I liked it like that. I still like hanging out at home, but now I also like going out with friends. I still don’t drink and that’s not going to change, but I am having a lot of fun. Even while grad school continues to pile on the work. Midterms and projects are coming up soon, but I feel ok about it. I’ll miss the free time I have now once I get a project for my training grant. It is nice to feel that this is the right place for me, where I should be in my life. I did expect certain things to be different than they are right now, but I’m ok with that too.
I was feeling a bit down today, for no real reason, but thinking about how my life is going actually makes me feel good. Now I just need a hot rich guy to fall into my lap and everything will be perfect :-) |

I... Taxidermist? Really? Well since what I will be doing is essentially Environmental researcher, some of those are right on the money. Although I think I may have overstated the animal like.
The improv show for my Level 1 class was last Sunday, and everybody says it was a good show so yay! I was too nervous to real notice I think. |

And I end up with a vampire:
Otto Chriek
A visionary, an artist and a leading figure of the Information Revolution in Ankh-Morpork, Otto Chriek likes to be "on the edge". Although two parts in love with his art, he is also fiercely loyal and will always make time for the humans in his - existence.
There might be a slight problem if you're too fond of garlic, and it's probably a good idea to be sure never to be too far from a black pudding. A good singing voice would also be a useful asset. But with these few simple precautions, there's no reason why you shouldn't have the time of your life. |

| | Ode to Joy in my head | ] | Learning to play the guitar is fun! At least some of it is. I hope I can keep it up once I start school, but 15-30 minutes a day shouldn't kill me. I can now play "Ode to Joy", "Jingle Bells", "London Bridge (is Falling Down)", and "Skip to My Lou" all at 80bpm, and I get faster every day. When I started trying to play them a couple of days ago there were a lot of shits, fucks, and goddamnits interspersed (I get this from my Dad), but not any more. I can probably handle other songs that only involve high B - G notes and no 1/8 notes. What I can't do is change between a C chord and a G7 chord in a timely manner. Stupid bastard chords! Even at 40bpm (the slowest my metronome goes) I still can't do it. It makes me sad :'( and frustrated, because then I don't want to practice the chords. I know I have to and the only way I'll improve is to practice them, but it's much more fun to play the notes where I can actually see and hear myself improving.
I may see about taking a lesson to help with the chord stuff. Once I have money anyway. 2 months of zero income also makes me sad. That'll change soon though. Classes start a week from Tuesday, eeeeee! |
